Mr. Baumann, a Swiss national aged 51, suffered a fatal heart attack while he was in Buenos Aires, Argentina attending the Youth Olympic Games. He held the position of FIBA Secretary General since 2003, had an MBA from the Business School of the University of Chicago, a Masters in Sports Administration Management (MEMOS) from the University of Lyon in France and a law degree from the University of Lausanne.
Mr Baumann became a member of the IOC in 2007. He was a member of the IOC Evaluation Commissions for the Olympic Games 2008 and 2020, a member of the Coordination Commission for the Olympic Games 2012, chairman of the Evaluation Commission and Vice-Chairman of the Coordination Commission for the Olympic Games 2024. He was also appointed Chairman of the Coordination Commission for the Olympic Games 2028 and was a member of various other IOC Commissions.
ULEB President Tomas Van Den Spiegel extended his condolences, on behalf of the Union of European Basketball Leagues, to the family and friends of Mr. Baumann, to FIBA and IOC, as this is a devastating loss not only for basketball but for the whole community of sports around the globe.
